I wasn't always an online junky. Nope. Once upon a time, I
barely knew how to turn a computer on. Once upon a time, instead of a live journal
I had a diary with pages and a little lock on the cover. Once upon a time, I
talked to my friends on the phone.
I guess the fascination started for me when one of my
friends got the internet at home*gasp* way back in 1995. At the
time, that was pretty amazing! She had this 10 hour per month plan, so I can
remember us being allowed ten minute bursts on the internet while we were over
at her place. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough to get me interested!
We finally got the net at home at the start of 1999.
("We'll use it all the time for school! It will be so useful for
research!") I played around on it a little at first, until I suddenly
realised that it could be used to further my Titanic addiction. <<insert
evil laugh here.>> I discovered some sites offering free Titanic graphics,
and since I didn't have a clue how to make graphics, that sounded pretty good to
me. I then made the worst web-page ever in the history of the internet (I used
word to make it, for heaven's sakes!) and proudly unleashed it on the world.
Strangely enough, no one visited, and I quickly realised just how bad my site
was.
So, I learned some HTML and made one major purchase- a copy of
Paint Shop Pro. And I haven't looked back! I've discovered that I just love
creating websites, and for me, now, whenever I discover a new interest, my first
thought is usually 'can I make a website on this?" I usually don't bother,
though, since I know how much work they take!
Thanks to my friend Anna, I also discovered the world of fan fiction.
I played around a bit with Titanic fic, but it is Moulin Rouge that has really
inspired me, and I am writing more now than I have in years. I love it! Right
now, I have two chaptered stories on the go, and at least three new ones
floating around in the back of my head. ("Go away, Christian! Not
now, I'm busy!")
I started to meet so many people online, and after a while, I
noticed that they all talked about this thing called ICQ. So, I asked
innocently, what is ICQ? I went through a stage where I was highly addicted to
ICQ... lol... I remember once staying on it all night when no one else was home-
I went to bed at 6 am. Although I don't use it so much anymore, I really value
the friendships I have made through it, especially Stef, Anna, Rhonda, Tami, the
whole Titanic gang, and George here in Melbourne. It is always great to have you
guys to talk to! I am also a bit embarrassed to admit that I use it to keep in
touch with my friends here too... why I don't just pick up the phone, I don't
know, but we chat away on MSN and ICQ all the time. :-)
Finally... this wouldn't be complete without mentioning how much
fun I have had on mailing lists since I've been online. First there was Titanic
friends.... which I am a moderator of. Love you guys! *g* It started out as a
group to help keep Titanic sites original, but it has turned into just a great
group of friends who share all our news, Titanic related or not. We are planning
to all finally meet in New York in mid-2002... I can't wait! I would also like
to say how much I am enjoying all the Moulin Rouge lists, especially the fiction
ones! I would drive my friends and family crazy talking about this movie if it
weren't for you all!
There are just two for the time
being- a Titanic one, and a brand spanking new Moulin Rouge one.
This site is sort of my baby. I
learned everything I know about graphic design and HTML with this site, and it
has developed from absolutely nothing, so I'm pretty proud of it :-) It is
temporarily down while I try to find time to finish the new layout, but it will
return! I made a pact a long time ago to always keep it on-line, and I
will be honouring that :-) Anyway, it is just your typical fan-site, and
although Titanic is quite old now, it does reasonably well still. When updated,
it gets around 50 hits a day. Doesn't the title suck, btw? I am bad at titles,
and by the time I got this site up, all the good names had been taken. *g* Well,
that's my excuse anyway. I started calling it STT and the name just sort of
stuck.
My new site! I just knew when I saw
Moulin Rouge for the first time that I had to do a site about it. This site is
only half finished, but I have big plans for it. It is getting around 70 hits a
day, so I'm very pleased with the way it's going so far! At the moment, it has
my fan-fiction, reviews, articles, lyrics, a picture gallery and not much
more... lol...but big updates are around the corner!
